District Friendship Evening & Beetle Drive.   A report from Jo.

President Jess kindly acted as chauffeur for Rosemary, Margaret and me.Eva was already there on District duty, with her

bags of money!

The tables were ready, set up for 4 people, so we sat together in  front of our printed papers for the Beetle Drive.  Our first reaction was indignation, as the rules had been changed since last we played Beetle!  We were required to throw a 1 first before we could start with the body!  “In the olden days” it always used to be a 6. What a business!  ( Not that it made the slightest difference!)

As was to be expected, Jess’s beetles were very artistic, but sadly she was not voted to be top for imagination. The bar staff chose Margaret Webb for that accolade.

Everyone was too tired or too lazy to move tables, so the consensus was to stay together all evening. The winner for the total of the rounds scored 174 points, with the loser having 84. We were all somewhere in between.

In all, our table consumed 2 chicken curries, one lasagne and one sausage and mash, followed by my profiteroles, which according to Jess “looked silly” next to her “superior” chocolate sundae! It was so tempting that Margaret ate half of it, having previously declared she would forego the dessert!

It was a fun evening, which raised £178 for Little Havens Hospice.

RNLI    LUNCH

An  enormous ‘ thank  you’ to all of you for making the RNLI lunch a success.

The  scene  was set beautifully.  A lovely sunny day, high tide  and people messing about in boats.  John ,  his son Chris, Lucy and Neil of the Lifeboat crew joined us in style, in full uniform, having moored the lifeboats at the pontoon.

A female voice was heard to say  “ I do love seeing a man in uniform”

Anne Thurgood  had  prepared the most difficult quiz ever  which broke the ice during the meal. I was delighted to add to our table’s score of  5  by knowing that a Nudibranch was a sea slug. ( I’m  a biologist!!)

After our delicious  lunch and scrummy desserts  Jeannie  bravely started our entertainment. She gave an informative and entertaining talk about her time raising money in the Southminster Ladies Lifeboat Group. Followed by Brian who told us of the time that the lifeboat begged to rescue him from  Creeksea.

John Hardy was an excellent speaker and kept everyone interested as he spoke of the jobs of the crew and the role of the modern day RNLI. We thanked him for making  our lunch special and presented him with a very inadequate bottle of wine. I also sent him a ‘thank you’ note on behalf of the club.

John Norden auctioned Jo’s knitted mascot and raised £20. Well done and thank you Jo.

It seemed that people enjoyed the afternoon and I can’t thank everyone involved enough, especially the committee who held everything together (and me).  Margie told me, in no uncertain terms, to sit down for 15 minutes so that she could eat her meal!!!

The washers up were brilliant and saved us so much work.

FINALLY………Margaret went the next day and cleaned the ovens. Rosemary and I  held an award ceremony at her home for ’ work above and beyond the call of duty’. We presented her with a pair of pink silicone gloves and a potted plant.
