Dive on HMS Scylla Saturday 1st July 2006

Your webmaster is pleased to report that HMS Scylla is looking good. Marine Life is really starting to get a
hold on the hull (Any Scylla ex Chief Bosun's Mates or members
of the "Side Party" would
have forty fits) as She is slowly becoming covered with white and jewel
anemones, which were really delicate and quite beautiful.
Wrass & Pollack are starting to make her their home, and I am sure there was much more marine life in and around her that I failed to spot. I was able to explore just a small part of her in the time available, despite having spent over two years of my life in her sister ship "Dido", so I knew my way around. Big holes have been cut in the sides of the wreck to allow far more intrepid souls than I to penetrate inside. At my time of life I just stick to looking in from the outside with a torch, and can report that the Ops Room appears to have all the radar plot tables still in situ - but someone has nicked all the chinagraph pencils ! Unfortunately my underwater camera decided to go U/S during the dive so am unable to provide any pictures. Thanks to Ken Byrne for allowing me to include the above photo of Anatomies on the Scylla. If you are able, and get the chance to visit her I would urge you to do so - I hope to return again next year to see how the marine life is developing, and hopefully with a working camera this time.

I dived with Aquanauts Dive Centre in Plymouth , nice people and well organised. And - best of all they had a mug of tea brewed and waiting for me when I got back in the dive boat. (That's what I call service .) |
